ON THIS DAY IN HORROR - June 7th

"HELLRAISER: DEADER" released on DVD in 2005

In the seventh installment of the Hellraiser saga created by Clive Barker, Pinhead (played again by Doug Bradley) returns to torment a fresh batch of souls who were foolish enough to tamper with the Lament Configuration.

Investigative reporter Amy Klein (Kari Wuhrer) is sent to Bucharest by her boss to investigate the origins of a video tape depicting the ritualistic murder—and subsequent resurrection—of a member of a cult calling themselves "The Deaders". The leader of the Deaders is the nihilistic Winter LeMarchand (Paul Rhys), a descendant of the toymaker who originally designed the puzzle box and has plans to use Amy and the Lament Configuration, which can open a portal to a realm populated by the Cenobites (hedonistic entities that experiment in forms of extreme sadomasochism), and harness their power for himself.

Hellraiser: Deader actually was written as an unrelated horror spec script by Neal Marshall Stevens, who also wrote the 2001 remake of Thirteen Ghosts, and, when it was decided that this would be a Hellraiser sequel, Tim Day drastically re-wrote the script, including an almost entirely new third act and plot and making the character of Winter a descendant of the toymaker Lemarchand. Hellraiser: Deader was filmed back-to-back with Hellraiser: Hellworld, both shot in Romania.

Only having a handful of isolated previews before being released on straight to video, Hellraiser: Deader was panned by the critics. Rotten Tomatoes collected a mere six reviews for the film, of which only one was positive.

Rotten Tomatoes Score:   17%
