ON THIS DAY IN HORROR - June 5th
"INSIDIOUS CHAPTER 3" released in the US in 2015
The third film (or chapter) of the Insidious series, see's the return of parapsychologist, Elise Rainier (played again by Lin Shaye) - focusing now on the events leading up to the first film, and shedding new light on the spirits and demons that inhabit "The Further". Joining forces with Specs and Tucker (Leigh Whannell and Angus Sampson), Rainer attempts to help a young woman, Quinn Brenner, who has been possessed by a demon from the Further. As Elise again enters their world, she encounters the same insidious entities she will face in future, including the creepy Bride in Black/Parker Crane and the Lipstick-Face Demon, before facing the true demon possessing Quinn.
Insidious Chapter 3 marks the first time the series to not feature Patrick Wilson and Rose Byrne, and the departure of James Wan from directing duties (though he remained on as a producer). Instead, the film was helmed by Wan's longtime collaborator, writer/actor Leigh Whannell, in his feature debut. Also returning, this time in a major role, is the awesome Lin Shaye, a veteran "scream queen" with appearances in 27 horror films over her career - beginning with Alone in the Dark (1982) and A Nightmare on Elm Street (1984) (both produced by her brother, former New Line Cinema founder/CEO, Bob Shaye). Angus Simpson and Whannell both reprise their roles of Specs and Tucker, bringing a much needed lightness to the film.
Released today on June 5th, the film faired much better with the critics than it's predecessor with a Rotten Tomatoes score of 58% (compared to Chapter 2's 39%), but grossed far less at the box office. Chapter 3 was billed as the "darkest" of the films in the Insidious franchise. Although many assumed that Chapter 3 may have the last film in series, that doesn't quite seem to be the case. When asked right before the release of the movie about another possible sequel - including an all new timeline - Whannell stated, "...I think there is a lot of room there. We’ve kind of established Lin [Shaye] in this particular film as kind of this superhero, so that would be kind of interesting to explore in the other film."
On May 16, 2016 it would seem that Blumhouse Productions agreed there was a lot more story to tell by announcing that Chapter 4 will be released in October 20 next year. Jason Blum, Oren Peli and James Wan will again produce, with Whannell writing and Lin Shaye returning as Elise Rainier. Directing this time around will be Adam Robitel, creater of Netflix's seriously creepy found footage film The Taking of Deborah Logan. This team will definitely make Chapter 4 worth waiting for!
